How to adjust rubber trim on door panel for wood trim

Hi guys, my 1996 CSE is taking shape now after quite a bit of work over last few months. Engine oil and trans oil change, spark plugs, DI swap, temp gauge replacement, tensioner and idler pulleys and serp belt, fuel filter replacement and mid section exhaust. Now it's time to fit the wood door caps that came (unfitted) with the car. Thanks to this board, I've got the door panels off both the front doors. I've measured and drilled the holes in the top of the panel and fitted the caps, but I see that the door caps are straight, yet the rubber trim held to the top of the door panel bows in halfway through its length, so in the middle of the door cap it is sitting ON TOP of the rubber trim, instead of snug against it as it is at either end. I've tried to work out how to pull the rubber trim out a little, but it's not budging. There are metal clips underneath the trim that are there to be a push fit against the edge of the door panel, but I'm nervous about using brute force at this point.
I could just live with it, but the door caps would be under tension and I know they are prone to cracking, so anyone know how to ease the rubber trim away from the door panel?
I should also ask if the rubber trim SHOULD be straight?
Thanks guys, any help appreciated.
