I spent about 30 minutes cleaning the surface of the block and the head. I used a wire brush as my wife had the shop vac right at the end of the wire brush picking up all the crud, so I don't think much got into the water jacket, but I was just going to try to drain it if it was easy to do. But if it is very involved, I am going to pass on it and flush the system as a whole in a few miles after I (hope) get it running again.
