A problem I see on the newer 9000 radios is lousy connections at the back. It seems that every year my '97 acts up; I've had no problems with my '92 (and had it since new).
My recommendation is to pop out the radio and EQ, remove the connectors, and spray them with contact cleaner. Let it dry throughly, and plug it all back together. That usually fixes it for me.
Now, you could have a bad connection internal to the radio - for that, you'd need to send it out. However, cleaning the contacts is cheap and easy. I like cheap and easy.
Note - when I spray the contact cleaner, I wear glasses, and cover the connector with a towel. That stuff comes out at speed, and can spray everywhere. If you get it onto your skin it's very cold - I don't want to think about getting it into your eyes. And it's nice to keep it off the dash.
