I actually drove the 86 to work today, I great step! Anyway..
I posted a little bit ago about a funny random smoke problem that I was not sure if it was actually oil smoke or condensation burning off from the exhaust.
I go to lunch today and no smoke on start up, no smoke on the 4 minutes at 55mph, and I see the guy behind me in the drivethrough has a nasty look on his face, and see some smoke wafting by in the side view mirror.
Yesterday I replaced my worm clamps with some heavier hose clamps off an F350 diesel intercooler and noticed there was oil in the intake pipe between the AFM and the turbo, you might recall this is a 3" pipe I made with all the fittings it needed for the stock hoses, just basicaly replaced the rubber (discontinued) hose with a metal one. So, there is some oil there, no smoke on cold start, no smoke on the road, no smoke on hard acceleration, just seems to kinda come about after running a short time and at idle.
My question is, could it not be sucking oil and oily vapors through the PCV hose enough to produce some smoke now and then? The check valve to the throttle body is good, the hose is good, the nipple in the valve cover is in place, might be a little loose in it's grommet, but not badly. I never saw this before A:my intake mod and B:removing the center muffler and gutting the converter.
Technicaly I suppose it's blowby if it is getting oil from the PCV line, but the motor has 109K on it and shows no other signs of wear, and no oil usage I can track yet (only have about 120 street miles on it). Could I put a catch can in this line between the valve cover and the intake pipe?
Would that help?
This is really anoying, but I'll be darned if I'm going to rebuild a motor because of such a small thing. Can I safely disable the PCV without causing more problems to test this theory?
Thanks for any input.
