The "cat" has a honeycomb, or other type of mesh, which is coated with platinum or palladium (the catalyst) to aid in converting hydro carbons which weren't burned in the cumbusion process as well as carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide and water.
The sound would make me look for a leak at the flex-pipe or other joint in the exhaust.
