One inch of mercury is just under .5 psi - it's a good plan to stick to one system of units! Most people here seem to use use psi or bar.

Anyway, 12 psi is .83 bar and that's well on target for your automatic car (Saab say .81 for my 97, I think) - but if it tapers back to 8psi (.55 bar) that's pretty well base boost, and zero at max revs really sucks. For comparison, my auto seems to spike to 1 bar then settle at .75 bar = 11 psi, trimming back to .7 bar = 10 psi, and I'm not very happy with that.

Also, the vacuum at idle seems a little low (or do I mean high - I'd expect a greater vacuum) - does anyone else agree?

So now you have the gauge, maybe you need to fix the cut-back before anything else, by hunting doen the usual suspects - leaks, plugs, fuel quality, hooter valve, bpc and so forth. Maybe try the hooter valve first?

Maximum boost on a '97 manual is 1 bar, I think. When I pull fuse 9 my gauge settles around .9 bar and then drops a little more (haven't help it long in top gear for the obvious reason - I quite like my driving license!)
