Noisy speedo cable, unusual though..

Here's one for you.
I've replaced more than my share of speedo cables on anything and everything over the years, but this one is very strange.
The angle of the cluster is causing a whering/whineing noise.
I thought it was the trans at first, but you can litteraly reach up and push the cluster fore or aft and it will either change or stop the noise completly, so I reason that it's the angle of the cable.
It's better since the weather is warm and the cluster is screwed in, but it's still there sometimes. I think I'm going to add something like a block of wood or such to actually hold the cable at whatever angle I find is the most quiet. The speedo needle is dead smooth, no other "normal" failure sounds, I lubed it with liquid spray silocon giving it time to soak it's way down, and used syn grease where it enters the cluster.
Anyone ever seen this on a 9K?
Oh, and the other bizarr thing is, the load on the trans effects it. At low speeds, clutch in or out changes the sound, generaly clutch in coasting the sound is less or gone. It is definantly the cable though, it's perfectly audible when you tilt it fore or aft.
Thoughts?
