On my 1995 I have to hold those buttons to get the whole recalibration completed. Otherwise it behaves as you say: quickly display a "0" and return to its business. When I hold the buttons it will start cycling through all the different settings and pick the right one. All leds light up one after another.
On the old 1992 I just had to briefly press the buttons to start off this process. Not on the 1995. The ACC unit is a different partnumber.
Just as a sidenote: I have to recalibrate regularly since I prefer driving with the moonroof open. This apparently 'confuses' the ACC. Just something to be aware of.
