The problem turned out to be the starter. More accurately, it was what we old timers call 'the Bendix', which is the mechanism that extends and retracts the starter gear into the flywheel. When the engine was cool, it would retract too slowly, and the sound was the starter gear grinding on the flywheel.
I didn't bother to look see if that portion could be rebuilt - with a little over 100K on the starter, I simply replaced it (much faster, too). Problem went away with the old starter.
In very rare cases, there is damage to the flywheel, which is not nice in terms of the work required. Of course, the longer you let the problem go on, the more wear there will be on the flywheel. My flywheel was just fine (maybe a bit of high polish on the tooth edges). The starter gear was starting to look a bit chewed up. At some point it would start shedding teeth.
The sound is localized to about the middle of the dashboard, maybe a hair to the right. That's where the starter is. If the sound is coming from the belt end of the engine, think Harmonic Balancer.
