Good Evening.
A while back I asked here about my engine cooling problem and got some
very informative replies that helped a great deal today (I saved and
printed them !).

On my '91 9KT, the low speed of the cooling fan was inop.
Also, the PO had used a really low quality jumper to keep
the fan on all the time while the car was used and had melted
one of the relay socket holes and distorted the connector
just from the excess heat made that way.

Here is what I found and what I did:

I first took a dremel with a small pointy burr and made
the connector into a hole and after separating the top
so I could access the wires I pulled out the burned
connector and trimmed off the distorted part of it.
Then, using a naked 1/4" female spade connector with a
big enough 'throat', I soldered it onto the crimped
stub, and made sure it tinned the wire too.
The connector now moves freely so when the relay is
pulled up, the connector comes with it so it can be
properly connected and disconnected and is visible
for inspection as well.

After reinstalling the relay I ran it and still had
no low speed fan response, so I began loking deeper...

Found the inline connectors for the thermo switch
to worn and corroded beyond repair and the blue wire
just hanging - so I had to add a section of 3
conductor cable after cutting out the dead stuff - but
had a momentary panic when I realized I had no hook-up
wire with me - then I remembered I had just the thing
in the trunk - a sacrificial PC power cord !
3 conductor, jacketed, and in this case also color
coded near enough to be helpful - so I wacked out some
8" of it, stripped, and properly connected it in between.

STILL no low speed fan - bummer !

Jumpered from blue to ground and got no relay action...
Grounded the relay at the blue and still - nothing.
Replaced the relay with a spare and PRESTO = low speed
was back !

My point in sharing this is to point out that while I
was in this process I was reading and re-reading the
excellent writeups for this from Quasi's site, and was
getting ready to condemn the thermo switch in error !

Following it's pigtail was the best thing I did today.
In order to access it I had to remove a section of
skirting near the oil filter - but that is where the
worst fault was to be found, and was 200% worth the
effort of back-tracking.

Aside of all the above, I want to once again thank all
the wonderful and helpful members of this community !!!
The willingly shared experiences here and the help that
is given whenever someone asks is fantastic, and I once
again salute all the great folks here at TSN !!!

My Thanks to all who have helped me,

mark
