I'm having A/C problems at the moment and in searching the board I stumbled across posts re seized compressors, not the problem I have at the moment, but it happened to me once, so I thought I'd pass on the tip..

This was in a 1993 2.3 CDE non turbo.

Driving home from work one Friday evening a few years ago, my compressor seized and the clutch could not be disengaged, so the serp belt was just rubbing on the compressor. I was only a block from my home (how lucky was that!)so I thought sod it, I'll just get home and sort it out there. When I got home and popped the hood, the friction created by the serp belt rubbing on the seized compresor pulley created so much heat I swear I could see it glow! As I watched it (engine off)the serp belt snapped from the heat and went twang. knowing less than I do now about a/c (ie nothing)and not having money to repair it, I sought a workaround, as I'm a salesman and needed my car for Monday.

I knew that some 9000s do not have aircon, so I figured that if I fitted a belt for a car without aircon, I could bypass the compressor and at least drive the car.

It worked! and i drove it like that for another 2 years!

So, anyone with a seized compressor, or one making expensive noises and likely to fail soon should invest in a non-aircon serp belt, even to keep in the trunk, as a get you home precaution.

Hope that helps someone

Regards

Andy (West London)
