I'd check the gap in the compressor clutch first as it's the easiest thing to do and stops you feeling annoyed after checking everything else first.
You should *just* be able to insert a credit card between the fan belt pulley on the compressor and the compressor body (with the engine off, of course).

When you turn the a/c on an electromagnet pulls the pulley close to the compressor body and the inner bit of the compressor pulley should spin. Over time, the clutch wears and the gap gets too large for the electromagnet to pull the pulley in to it.

A good way of checking that this is indeed your problem is that with the engine running and the a/c set to low and auto, give the pulley a shove towards the compressor body with the handle of a large screwdriver or similar, careful as if it does engage, you don't want the pulley to grab the screwdriver and throw it over your shoulder into the eye of a lawyer :-)

If the compressor pulley now spins and you get cool air, that is your culprit.

Search "clutch shim" on this board for a fix. If it is a Seiko compressor, it's a 10 minute job. It's a bit more complex on a sanden compressor, but I've only had Seiko compressors myself.
