Enrichment problem solved Posted by Gene N [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I solved my mixture problem on my 1991 9000T. See the link below for a description of the problem. The spark plugs and the Bosch LH 2.4.2 fuel injection computer both agreed that the car was running rich, not to mention I was getting around 16-18 miles per gallon on a tank of premium. I replaced the O2 sensor without any improvement. I had tested the fuel pressure regulator for leaks through the vacuum nipple, but there were none. I debated on getting a pressure gauge to test the injector rail pressure, but the cost for a new FPR ($57) was less than the cost of cobbling up some fittings and gauge, so I just ordered a new one.
I put the new FPR in on Saturday, and instantly the mileage went up to 24 MPG and the check engine light was gone. I'm still baffled by the FPR failure. If I put a vacuum pump on the nipple, the bad FPR will hold 28 inches of Hg for a couple of minutes, so the diaphram is still intact. I wonder if somthing was stuck in the FPR or maybe the spring broke?
I thought I would post this because it was a case where the FPR failed, but it did not have the condition where gas pours out of the vacuum line, which is what most poeople talk about.
