knock sensor, what are symptoms if bad

1992 9000T, base boost only. I have replaced BCV, by-pass valve, vacuum hoses, checked waste gate, etc., still I have base boost only (indicator goes no higher than mid-yellow). Once I disconnected W-hose, car went right to maximum boost (with fuel cutoff as a result).
It has been suggested that perhaps the knock sensor is detecting knock and this causes ECU to limit boost. There is no knock (93 octane fuel is routinely used), and no shudders or vibrations that I can feel that would cause knock sensor to "detect" knock.
Two questions: If the knock sensor is faulty, what other symptoms might I expect to see? (For example, if I disconnect the sensor, will I get a check engine situation, will engine run?).
If knock sensor is fine, and there are no knocks, what else can keep me in base boost? Just the ECU?
BTW, the battery has been disconnected on several occasions for other reasons, so the ECU should have had multiple resets.
thanks
Ed N
