Door lock broken

Hi,
I have a broken driver's door lock. Symptoms: the key will activate the power locks and all of the other 3 doors will lock and the alarm will be set. The driver's door won't lock with either the key or by manually pressing down the inside button. When I lift the lock button up and down, I can hear on the down motion an extra sound of something dropping, that isn't there on the passenger side door. The extra sound sounds like it is coming from the area near the exposed metal latch mechanism that actually keeps the door closed and locked (the part that fits in with the peg that sticks out of the door jamb).

I took enough of the screws out of the interior panel to barely get a look at what is going on in there and I can see the lock button attached to a long rod and the rod moves when you lock and unlock, but I can't tell what goes on downstream of that.

2 questions:
Anyone know what the problem is?
and
How to I get the plastic cover that surrounds the handle off, which is where I suspect the final screws that hold on the panel are?

Please help! I live in a crime-ridden area and my car is unlocked!
