I never really thought about the heat. I have enough high mileage experience on two cars to say that the bypass valve has lasted about 100,000 miles on both my cars, one failing at about 90,000 miles (1990) and the other failing at 118,000 miles (1991). If you use the plumbing from the 88, will you use the aluminum intake tube? On the 1991, the tube has a spot for the air intake sensor, while the 1988 does not. Also, the rubber elbow that connects to the throttle body is a different size. I think you can just move the rubber hoses that connect to the bypass valve and accomplish what you want.
