Hi Terrance,
That doesn't make sense to me. Especially given the fact that you were pressing in the brake and clutch to start the car, that's not like you're repeatedly pumping them 30 times...
However, the fluid should be above the minimum line when the accumulator is fully charged - i.e. turn the ignition to on, wait for the accumulator to click off, then check your fluid level from there.
The brake system and clutch system share the same reservoir. The clutch hose comes off the reservoir well above the brake lines - this is good, because you'll lose clutch before the brakes in the case of a leak, and let's face it, brakes are more important!
If the fluid level got low enough for the clutch line to glup some air, then you could definitely experience the symptoms you described.
The puddle below your transmission worries me... either way, if I had experienced what you experienced, I would bleed the clutch system, ensure the fluid level is perfect when the accumulator is charged, and see what happens from there.
