A rod knock would get worse as the engine warms up and the oil thins out. The only bottom end probably that might not do this is piston slap. As the engine warms up the piston expands, minimizing play and stopping the knock. An engine can go a darn long time with piston slap, but it's up to you whether you want to chance it. That said, I've never seen anyone report piston slap on a Saab engine on these boards. I would be darn sure it's not one of the accessories (eg alternator) as these can display strange knocking behavior, as well as double check that it's not the top end. A mechanic's stethescope can help narrow down the location, as can a length of hose to your ear in a pinch. I definitely would write it off as a bearing failure.
