Automatic vs 5-speed

As the owner of a '92 9000T automatic, and having driven a variety of other manual and automatic 9000s over the years:
Don't even think about a 2.0 automatic. You'll get beaten off the line by old ladies on bicycles and the combination defines 'turbo lag'.
The 2.3, by contrast, is blazing-quick off the line, at the low end it gives up nothing to the 5-speed car.
The 2.3 automatic has some downsides, though:
1) It shakes a lot at idle. The torque converter loads the engine at a speed where the balance shafts do it no good. From 1100RPM up, glass-smooth, but at 900RPM idle it shakes.
2) The ZF 4HP18 transmission is pretty lumpy in its shifting behavior, especially in part-throttle 'kick-down' downshifts.
3) It's missing a gear. It could really use tighter gear spacing, and it's spinning fairly fast (by modern standards) at freeway speeds.
I wish our car were a 5-speed, I find the clutch-and-shifter action in the manual 9000 to be pretty nice, but I'll admit this car has some advantages in traffic and - specifically - this one keeps the manual-gearbag-averse spouse happy.
