Dumb question about oil filter and adding oil

I've been reading about extended oil drain intervals over at BITOG and this got me thinking about my 98 9000T.

Some say to leave the oil in the engine, and just change the oil filter half-way through. I never gave this much thought before.

I always thought that if the oil filter is removed, all the oil will drain out. Can I safely remove the oil filter to change it without losing all 5 quarts? (I'm prepared for a little to come out that is in the filter itself)

Also, do I refill the oil in the dipstick tube? I would assume so as I don't see any other caps near the valve cover.

Just a gripe...I can't ever seem to get the dipstick twisted back on right. I press down gently and turn to get it to lock in place...sometimes it catches and sometimes it doesn't. It's also very hard for me to see the oil level, must be the way the dipstick snakes around in the tube. Does anyone else have this problem? Other cars I've had had a nice dipstick near the front of the car that read nice and clear and was easy to replace.

Sorry for these 2 dumb questions...my former cars always had separate oil filler caps on the valve cover.
