As Ed alludes, there is a (hidden) adjusting screw on the back of the caliper. It's covered by a 15 or 17 mm bolt head. Under it is a 7 mm allen. You use that to retract the piston when installing new pads, and to adjust the piston out to just have the pad kiss the rotor. Parking brakes are adjusted via the cables at the handbrake lever.
The bad news is that if you simply pressed the piston back into the caliper, say using a C-clamp, you broke the mechanism. That's the dirty little secret of the 9000 and later OG900) rear brakes.
If the calipers are pretty rusted, it is very possible that the piston has corroded and sticks. When you press the pedal, lots of pressure pushes the piston out. When you release the pressure, it doesn't pull the piston back. When the pressure releases, the slight imperfections in the rotor serve to push the pad back just a little. But that force is a lot less than braking force, so if some dirt gets behind the rubber dust cover, or the piston bore corrodes up because of water in the brake fluid, the piston will be somewhat hard to push back. So the caliper drags.
Definately try the parking brake trick - remove the cable from the lever. But if the piston still drags, then the caliper needs to be rebuilt/replaced.
