235 width is pushing it a bit, surely? I reckon you need what fits the car rather than what's going at Costco... :<)
I had Konis and Abbott Springs on my old '93. When I got onto Giles Fairweather because the ride was too hard he told me to adjust the fronts to a quarter turn from the softest setting, but forget about the rears because adjusting them didn't do anything much!
Ended up fitting F1 GS-D3s because they had nice soft sidewalls, so the fillings stayed in my teeth. Once I'd got the pressures right, handling was spectacular on smooths roads, as neutral as you will get in a front-drive car. Still a bit hard for my taste, though. But the current '97 wears S-03s - you're so right, great tyre - but at 205/55-16 like it says in the book. Never liked Michelins much.
Quite seriously - you are running wide, skinny tyres on 17" wheels and I'm not surprised something is rubbing somewhere, or thar you are feeling it in the kidneys.
