Well, they certainly can go around that time but plenty don't - I guess you have to be as confident as you can be that the previous owner(s) have done proper maintenance, budget for failure, then take a sensible view if and when it happens. However, this is a problem-solving board so you'll get more people posting about failures than about boxes that didn't break! And manuals are not without their problems or costs either.
As far as actually driving the things are concerned, I'm a huge fan of the auto transmission mated to 200bhp of turbo engine - and I have a die-hard sports-car background.
