Regular readers may recall that I replaced a dead BPC last fall. It died about 4 months later. With the replacement the car ('96 CSE 5 spd) ran great . Then in early March I was suddenly back at base boost on the tail end of a 760 mile trip from NH to Rochester, NY.
Resistance on the BPC tested fine but I couldn't blow through the top port. So I tapped it a few times with a screwdriver handle. That freed it up-- I could blow thru the port and I reinstalled the BPC. Car ran better than ever, eager at lower speeds and would hit the red even on mid-grade gas. Been like that since March.
So Wednesday I'm doing the run out to Rochester again. Car had felt fine, but it was pouring rain and no reason to dive into the boost. Accelerating out of a service area, though, I suddenly don't have full boost. Hmmm. I stop at the next area, yank the BPC and blow thru it. All OK. Am tight on time, so I reinstall and drive on with base boost.
Thursday morning, on my only chance to nail the gas, I get FULL BOOST right to cut off past the red zone. Then in the afternoon, headed back home, I could right to the red, no prob. I'm happy!
Halfway home, I'm back to somewhere between base boost and normal: sometimes it gets to the bottom of broken orange, other times to about 1 o'clock.
It's interesting... the car feels like it wants to go--the boost comes in stronger at the bottom than it usually does with base boost, and it "feels" like it's getting more than base, even on hills.
This morning (haven't driven today) I test the BPC with a meter and am getting 2.5 resistance on each side, which is in the normal range. Didn't have time to remove and see if it's plugged.
Questions: Can a hooter valve affect boost? How about the DI? Vacuum lines seem to be connected and a quick look shows the waste gate actuator rod to be connected. Can the wastegate itself be a problem?
Car is running great otherwise and getting 28 mpg in mixed driving over the 800 mile trip with me not being particularly gentle, especially on the rural twisty part of my route.
Any thoughts?
