It could be a shorted compressor clutch, or as simple as the wire to the clutch has grounded out on the chassis.

First, I'd stop feeding it fuses. I'd do a visual around the compressor, paying special attention to the wire to the compressor clutch. I would also look in the FRONT of the grill by the compressor, as there is a small fan on the front of the radiator that is the AC fan. The same fuse drives both. If you can, try and spin the fan blades - if the fan is frozen, that's a bad sign. The fan could still be shorted and the blades spin, but it's an easy test.

The fan is in the same location so the smell could be from a cooked fan.

Next, with the fuse out, I'd start the car and look at the compressor. The outside of the clutch where the belt drives should be spinning. The center of the clutch should NOT be moving. If it is moving, then the clutch has siezed. One outside possibility is a bad compressor which is causing the clutch to slip, which (1) makes a stink, and (2) overheats the clutch, possibly shorting it out. Outside chance only.

Next, I'd disconnect the compressor clutch and fan, and test them separately with an ohm-meter. I don't know the proper resistances, but I would estimate the clutch to be on the 0.5 to 1 ohm for a good clutch, and much less than 0.5 ohms for a bad clutch. The fan is probably twice that (1 to 2 ohms for a good one). This is tricky, because most personal ohm meters don't measure accurately below 1 ohm (most aren't very good below about 10). Another way would be to connect just the clutch wire and try a fuse. If it doesn't blow, disconnect the clutch wire and try just the fan. If it blows on one, you've found the problem.

My guess is that you've got a hard short circut, not just that one of the loads has increased a little. But don't ignore the AC fan
