i have read here the general consensus is to replace them every other set of pads.
if they shake or are really ugly, do them.
mine are starting to shake pretty good (at 187k) and i plan on replacing them soon.
but like Abusot said, if they're straight it's ok to leave them.
they're a lot cheaper than they used to be (in general). at least you don't have to press the front end apart and change the wheel bearing like some cars used to require!
