So they did change the idea.
I think the idea was really good when it came out in 1990 but the ignition cassette has gotten some bad reputation due to the high failure rate of the black ones in the 9-3 and 9-5 model.
What owners need to keep in mind is to look at the IDM as a wear and tear item just like the ignition cap, rotor and spark plug wires in the old days.
Replacing the red ignition cassette every 100K miles will take care of most of the problems, just like replacing a water pump or timing belt (where applicable) and so forth.
Most of the time it is not the ignition coil themself that goes bad but other electronic pieces inside the IDM, so using seperate coils would probably not fix the problem.
