the pan is on top on the ZF tranny in a Saab.
the filter comes out the bottom with a plate held in my 3 M6 bolts (10mm head)
the first thing recommended when having trans problems is to change the ATF 3 times. on mine, if i drain both the plug by the final drive and pull the filter plate, it takes exactly 5 qts to fill it.
3 changes gets most of the old fluid out. i did mine twice late last summer and was starting to have problems recently. i looked at the fluid and it was dark, but not burned smelling. i changed it last week and it feels better already.
i need to get a case and a couple qts of ATF and do it 3 more times in a couple days. hopefully then i can stop worrying about it.
do you do your own oil changes? while the car is up it's a simple matter to do the trans too.
another thing that is recommended is leaving it in 3rd rather than drive until you get to a 55 mph or better zone. i just started doing this, and i don't miss the lurchy 4-3 shift that happens way too frequently.
there's another auto trans thread a couple posts down from this, and the archives are rich with others.
