the '97 Aero quit on the way to work this morning. As we speak it is on its way to Jak's. Here's what happened:
Background: I have been troubleshooting overboost issues the last few weeks. Last weekend the check engine light came on. It never blinked, just came on and stayed on. i had the code pulled yesterday: #1 O2 sensor.
This morning I went out to the car and started it up. It turned over for about 4 seconds before finally starting which is about 3 seconds longer than it normally takes. I noticed the check engine light was blinking now as i figured it should be the whole time. I assumed all this was due to the bad o2 sensor i discovered yesterday. Without too much concern, i left. My commute is about 5 miles of suburban traffic lights before i get to the interstate. the aero drove fine and i wasn't driving hard at all trying to save gas.
Here's where is all goes wrong:On the onramp to the interstate i was in 3rd gear merging with traffic again i had plenty of space so the needle was only about 1/3 to 1/2 into the YELLOW on the stock gauge. The car stumbled breifly and seemed to catch itself no strange noises or anyting, so i shifted up to 5th. About 10 seconds later i lost all power. It wouldn't boost past 1/3 in the yellow and i couldn't get past 65 mph. I look in the rear view mirror to see smoke and orange embers coming out of the back. I immediately put in the clutch and before I can get my hand to the keys the engine stalled. I switched on the hazards and coasted onto the shoulder.
When i popped the hood, there seemed to be no excessive heat, no smoke, everything looked normal. Plenty of good looking oil. Through out the ordeal it never made any noises that i could hear (the radio was off but the windows were up). The car cranks fine but after several seconds the starter just stops the dash light dim until i let go fo the key.
What do you think is wrong? Of the 3 saabs i have owned, this the first time one has let me down.
