As you can see from a post form me up above, I went to Saab and ended up getting "Synchro-Shift II" for my 98 CSE. The Saab techs put this stuff in all Saab transmissions, from C900 to 9-5's and everything in between. Its a synthetic gear oil with a weight of 70-80W, but it flows out of the bottle into the funnel on its way to the gear box like its as thin as 10-30W (though it smells a little like the old 90W gear oil).
I drove the car to work today, smooth shifting (was smooth before, so apparently no harm). Tech says I should drive for ~500 miles, drain and replace with new "Synchro-Shift II" as part of the flushing process. I think I'll do this every 40,000 miles or so.
But that's on my 98 CSE, which conveniently has a drain plug. On the other hand, my 93 CSE has no drain plug and I've never changed the transmission fluid, even through the car has close to 250,000 miles, with absolutely no tranmissions problems. The oil on the transmission dip stick looks clear and is at the right level. I may try the suction-out method, but then again, I may take my kids to the pool instead.
