Apply battery voltage to the resistor on the fan, on the side of the resistor not connected directly to the fan motor. The fan should spin. Then connect battery voltage to the other side of the resistor (fan side). the fan should spin much faster.
You'll need a BIG fat wire - the fan takes around 20 amps, assuming it is already at speed. My recommendation would be to find a fat wire (16 gauge) and attach it to the resistor. Then touch the other side to the positive lead of the battery. If the fan spins, remove the wire from the battery, move the wire on the resistor, and then touch the battery post again.
You don't want to attach the wire to the battery and then try and touch the resistor. Two reasons - first, if you miss and touch any part of chassis, there will be a huge spark and you risk getting badly burned. Second, your hand will be close to the spinning fan, and again, when it comes on, you could move the wire and hit ground.
Ideally, you should put a fuse in the wire from the battery to the fan, but it best be at least 30 amps. That's great for the low speed. but if the fan is stopped and you connect directly to the high speed, a 30 amp fuse can blow. that's because it takes A LOT of current to get the fan running from a dead stop; however if it is already moving (say at the low speed setting), it takes a lot less current to speed it up a little.
