Loss of power and smoking turbo

Tonight we took a few friends to dinner. I went from work in my 94cde. Wife drove the 95cse with kids and friends from home. Coming home from the restaurant following the 95cse, I felt first hand how serious the problem was. My daughter has been driving the car for the summer. The 95cse has been my daily commuter before she came home. Never have I realized sitting in the cabin the turbocharger was leaking oil that bad. I confirmed it tonight. Driving in the 94cde following behind the 95cse, I see a puff of smoke whenever she was accelerating. Actually it was more than a puff of smoke. It was almost shrouded in smoke. So I need to replace the charger this weekend.
But that's minor compare to my next problem. It is also with the 95cse.
We stopped at a parking lot in a shopping center. Wife could not start the 95cse again. There is no power. It is as if the battery was not even connected. I know because when I open the door the door light didn't come on. Yet the battery posts were very tight. I switched on ignition. There was nothing, complete darkness.
So I called AAA and stayed with the car myself, sending them home in the 94cde. AAA came, fast charged the battery. It took about 10 minutes and I restarted the 95cse to go home.
About 5 miles from home, all of a sudden it lost power again. The car coasted to a stop unreponsive to the gas pedal. Owning the 9k for so long and also working with each and everyone of them so much I thought nothing on the 9k could faze me anymore. But It was scary. I have to admit. The feeling of helplessness and not knowing what went wrong.
Fortunately I was able to restart it and came home. Thank God. But why? The battery was an Interstate bought in December, '05.
My son told me this is exactly what happened to him on the 94cs turbo last week. I now know how he feels. I suspect the 94cs turbo and the 95cse turbo have the same problem.
What is it? Bad alternator? Bad ground?
