So as I said, I replaced the headgasket, and I started it up tonight. It runs for a few seconds then dies. I feels like I have a vacuum leak but I checked everything. The exhaust smells strongly of fuel. I suspect the timing is off.
I popped off the valve cover, and the timing is how I left it - the 0 degree mark is seen through the circular hole in the bellhousing/ transmission. Is the "timing mark" the hole or is it the two raised extrusions on the edge of the rectangular cut out? Can anyone understand that? The slot or the hole?
I'm suspect I guessed wrong previously, and assumed TDC was when 0 degrees was visible through the hole. But would this account for the no-running and the fuely-exhaust smell?
The cams are properly timed relative to eachother (15 pins).
Cliffs:
1. Headgasket
2. Won't run for more than 5 seconds after starting
3. Fuel-smell exhaust
4. Suspect timing - When the cams are lined up, the flywheel 0 degree mark is visble through the circular hole.
5. Is the timing mark the hole or the slot on the rectangular cut-out?
Thanks in advance,
Tim
