How old is the thermostat? First of all, is the coolant filled between MIN and MAX in the expansion tank - if not you might be getting a bogus reading of the running temp. If filled properly, 1/8" ove the green is probably way too low - my car runs at about 9:00 with a lower-temp 82-degree C thermostat. If the engine is not heating up properly, it will run with an incorrect mixture, which may cause the results that you are seeing.
