Engine won't crank Posted by Eric S [Email] (#818) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Eric S) on Sat, 22 Jul 2006 13:28:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My 1990 9000CD suddenly won't start. The engine does not crank over at all. When I turn the key to the ON position, the car appears to have full electrical power - dash lights are strong, vent fan and headlights work, etc. When I then turn the key to START, the engine doesn't crank. The other power in the car all goes down to almost nothing and just stays there when the key is returned to the ON position (i.e., headlights no longer will shine, vent fan is severely diminished). If I turn the key to OFF and then try to start it again, the power is still at almost nothing. If I disconnect the battery and start the process over again, the electrical power will revert back to full, but the same problem persists when I try to start it again. The battery is good (I have tried putting in a known good battery, with the same result.) Would this be a symptom of a starter that is shot, or more like a problem of a broken ground/earth?
