Yep! I didn't know until the engine was removed. Started this morning to look at the car which was flat bed home early morning. See the post below. Before going on the flat bed, the engine would start but has no power. This morning it would not start. A metal rubbing sound occurs when I attempted to start. I checked the dipstick. There was very little oil. It was not a good sign. Oil was evident on the outside of the sump but I could not tell where it came from.
I drained oil. Only about half a quart came out. The drain plug was very loose. I was somewhat relieved the oil which came out has no evidence of metal shavings. So I installed the drain plug and poured 5 quarts of Mobile 1 in. Next I measured compression. No. 4, 3, and 2 have 155 to 165 psi. No. 1 has nothing. Zero. Then I placed a screw driver into the spark plug hole to rotate the engine. It wasn't moving up and down. Apparently No.1 piston threw a rod.
By then I still held out hope to savage the engine. If the block has no hole I could salvage it. I told myself. So I proceeded to remove the drive train, until I saw the 2" diameter hole next to the cat hanger bracket.
Thinking about it when I started the engine last night after replacing the belt No. 1 piston wasn't working already. The severe vibrations at idle was evidence. Yet I drove 30 miles at 70 mph on the turnpike with only three cylinders before the engine finally gave out at the turnpike Exit 9.
There were signs to the trouble weeks before. I think I posted the loud valve tapping at start up but dismissed it. I'll be shopping for a replacment engine again.
