I'm guessing you have an automatic. The manual transmission models had the 80 amp alternators and manual tensioners, while automatics had 115 amp alternators with the hydraulic shock tensioner. You are going to have to take the serpentine belt off to get the alternator off, so removing the shock should not be much extra work. On my car, I could remove the alternator through the wheel well after removing the brace in the opening. Most people use a breaker bar on the top shock bolt to remove the tension. I think that will work for your car too, although it won't be as easy as on the 2.3L engines.
The key thing to remember is the top shock bolt is a left hand thread.
