My '97 CSE accelerates well in low gears but I have to do it right. I find that there is a fair bit of turbo lag when pushing the gas hard at low rpm in any gear, even though maximum torque is supposed to be available at 1800rpm. If I want to accelerate quickly from a standstill I let the rev the engine to around 2500rpm and then release the clutch, holding the accelerator down. Then I shift into second at, say, 4500rpm. I used to be able to lay rubber in second gear quite easily in this car but since I put new Yokohamas on it in January, it takes more effort. Saab limited the torque to 170 ftlbs in these cars in first and second gears for a reason! I have owned this car for almost five years and found that it took a lot of experimentation to get the most out of it performance wise. With a turbo, you have to learn the right engine speeds at which to make gear changes and how much accelerator pedal to give it. I agree with you that these cars are made for the highway.
