I am presently in the process of "re-turboing" my 86. It had the same symptoms as yours. The bearing was so worn that the impeller vanes were hitting the inside of the housung! The most difficult task is to unbolt the A/C compressor and move it aside without disconnecting its hoses. It is also hard to get at the 4 bolts holding the turbocharger unit to the exhaust manifold. I ended up removing the manifold then removing the T/C from it on the bench. Good luck.
