fuel delivery.......(potentially dumb questions)

First - I drive an 86 9kt w/ 263k. Driving home last night, it suddenly started to stumble, and eventually died. It ran better with no pressure on the throttle pedal than with pressure. I think I just ran out of gas, because this morning, after getting gas, it ran just fine. My fuel guage works intermittently, so seeing it pinned to the bottom is nothing new. But here's the caveat - the low fuel light HAD been working, and always seems to. Last night, it did not come on, which caused my novice-mechanic mind to go crazy. There were no fluid leaks under the car, no hoses blown, no strange sounds or smells......So here are the questions - 1. Do the fuel guage and low fuel light work independently? What is the mechanism that causes the low fuel light to come on? 2. Do these symptoms appear to be indicitive of another major problem, or just my lack of responsiblity to keep the tank filled? 3. What is the fuel capacity of this car, and at what point does the warning light come on?
Thanks in advance for any help......I really hope I just ran out of gas and that there are no major issues (aside from irresponsibility) that need to be adressed, or this sweet Swede will be parted out.
