My 1992 9000T suffered a failed transmission awhile ago (at ~200,000 miles). Car is still on my driveway. My best-car-ever 1993 CSE, which I still drive, is pushing blue smoke at startup due to (I suspect) failed valve guide seals (at 246,800 miles).

To replace the 1992 I put my wife in a 1998 CSE (120,000 miles). That car is essentially flawless (don't hold me to that when I report problems in the future!). We got the 98 for $4200 back in Dec 2005, .... it took awhile to put it on the road due to lack of motivation while 92 & 93 Saabs worked w/o problems.

I had contemplated putting a used transmission in the 92, but the yard wants $750 for it. Moreover, the 92's radiator is now cooling off the 93, so it would also need a radiator (or its old one back). Both the 92 and 93 have SRS lights on and no headliners, but otherwise work fine. The 93's SR doesn't close properly, there's a jam in the tracks somewhere, so it whistles at 80 mph.

I could fix the 93's valve guide seals (my 11 year son is very eager to help do the job). But I can only imagine getting it back on the road (w/failed SRS and no headliner) only to have the transmission die.

So, I just picked up a 1995 CSE with 130,000 miles. Cost me $1900. I'll shake the problems and likely delete the 92 & 93. Can't help but miss the 93, I've had it since 1997, and am responsible for nearly 200,000 miles on the odometer. I remember so many times on the NY Throughway, in snow storms, at night, cold outside, wife and kids warm and asleep, me and the Saab handling the situation just fine.

BTW, did you know that you can put all you stuff in a roof top carrier, fit one wife in front, two kids in back, and two 6 month old German Shepard puppies in the hatch (lid removed of course) and go on a long drive to the beach. And when you get close to the beach, you can put the dogs with the kids and fit four 5000 BTU window AC units in the hatch. I never felt cramped at all, and kids continued to watch their movie on the 5" TV slung between the front seats.

The 9K is a truely amazing design. Wonder why the didn't sell very well, especially when compared to the competition.

still Saab'ing

And my 1988 SPG up on blocks continues to ask, "what about ME?"
