I run a VW Audi garage. In 1998 VW/Audi brought out the 1.8 turbos. What they found after 1 year was that only in North America were they getting engines that were carboning up so bad they would destroy themselves after about 60,000km.Sinc 2003 they are recommending oil changes every 8000 KM with synthetic oil only. But only an oil that meets European specs. And there is a hidden warrantee up to 140,000 KM if you have engine damage and have all oil change documentation.I have documentation from an Audi magazine from last year that explains the difference between the North American oils and the euro spec oils.Too long to go into here.I will post it if the site admin gives me the ok.It is very much an eye opener.Or will e-mail if asked. After servicing these cars regularly I can see the difference between the oils just by the carbon on the inside of the oil filler cap.I have one customer that has bought a case of Mobil 1 Euro spec oil.It was clearly marked on the bottles. My thinking is that if there was no difference why have they done this.I think that who ever is having oil carboning or oil issues period especially in a turbo use a euro spec oil.It protects better whatever grade you use.I use 5W40.
