My daughter has been complaining about difficulty finding 5th since she started driving it beginning of summer. I know it. Compare to the 94cs and the 94cde both of which shift into each gear crisply the cse is difficult. I have gotten used to it since I did the clutch early last year. I thought she will get used to it too even though I meant to fix it eventually. It was very low on the list of things to do.
I finally did it tonight. Took only 10 minutes. Naturally the cse is now shifting into each gear as crrisply as the other two 9k's.
Tools needed:
two 5/16" diameter rod, two small Philips screw drivers will also do,
13 mm socket and 3/8" ratchet,
T10 torx bit,
flashlight (you'll need it even during the day)
1. Shift the gear into fourth. Pull the parking brake.
2. Open the hood. Stand on the driver side next to the engine bay. Stick the left hand in front from between the heater hose outlet and the top of the gear box to reach a black plastic plug on top of the gear box. The plug is an inch or two inside from the gear shift selector rod connected to the same from the cabin. Pull the plug. Insert one of the round rod into the hole. It locks the gear box in fourth.
3. Use the right hand to reach behind the engine and the false bulkhead. Use the 13 mm socket and ratchet to loosen the nut on the collar connecting the gear shift rod from the cabin side and that on the gear box side. There is no need to separate the two.
4. Move into the cabin. Remove the leather boot on the gear shifter. Loosen the torx screw in front of the trim plate at the base of the shifter. Remove the trim plate.
5. Shine the flashlight into the base of the gear shifter. There is a hole in front of the base of the shifter. Wiggle it slightly so the hole lines up with another one on the gear selector rod just below it. Insert the second rod to lock it in fourth.
6. Now both the gear box and the shifter are locked in fourth. Tighten the nut on the collar connecting the two sections of shift selector rod.
8. Remove the rod on the gear box. Insert the plastic plug back in. Get into the cabin. Remove the second round rod. Put the trim plate and leather boot back.
