oh when you get LHM (limp home mode) you will recognize it!
The following at least:
1) the gas pedal needs a gorilla to get it to move, feels like there is a coil spring under the pedal, a very very heavy spring.
2) the engine will not idle, you *have to* press gas to keep it going.
3) the AC will not operate.
4) if you were not in 4th gear in the auto at the time it happens, it will not shift up to fourth. It will also shift later and higher in rpms.
5) the engine will stall, see 2) above, when you stop causing you to use words you shouldn't.
it usually gets reset, sometimes only temporarily, by turning the key to the off position and counting to three, and then back on. You can do this while coasting, I know!
sometimes you can "two foot" drive, right foot on gas and left on brake, and get moving down the road about 25mph or so and just apply the brake a little and then release and this may put into a mode that bypasses the gas and transmission portion of the LHM.
basically if you ever had a car stall and had to drive it with the engine off (no power steering, no brake assist, no engine power either) then you have approximated LHM. something to avoid if possible. :)
