You need 3 things to get it to start:
- fuel (and air)
- compression
- spark
An '88 has a distributor and a single coil (?) - whereas Holly's has a crank position sensor and a DI unit with a coil per cylinder. But, both need the same things to start.
Fuel - Does the fuel pump run when you first turn on the key? Is there fuel in the tank? If you pull a sparkplug, is it wet with gas? If not, if you squirt some carb cleaner in the intake, will the engine fire up?
Compression - Probably not a problem, unless the engine's tossed its chain, at least as far as starting goes.
Spark - You can pull a spark plug, plug it in its wire, ground it to the engine block or something metal and try to start. You should see it spark. If you don't - look at the distributor. Pull the cap, and see what it looks like. Turn the engine over - does the distributer rotate?
With the DI and CPS its a more complicated set of tests, but for the same things.
