If you disconnect the coupler and grab the shaft coming out of the transmission, you should be able to pull it out and push it in and feel it pop into and stay in gear at either end of the travel. Center position is third and fourth. If you twist, then pull or push, you'll get the other gears. Unfortunately if it flunks this test and you can't get positive engagement in all six positions(1st thru 5th and reverse), I don't know of anything else you could do but pull the transmission and open it up.
