Add up what you paid for the car and the cost of all repairs to date and divide by the no of months you have had the car. Thats roughly the cost/month of your capital investment in the car, to date.

Now do the same calculation but also include the cost of future repairs and the future no of months you estimate the car will last (or how much longer you want to keep it). Thats your projected cost/month over the projected life of the car.

Can you live with those numbers?

In my case, my car is around $125/month and the number is going down because I haven't had to do anything major in a while. My car is not perfect, but I'm not embarrassed to be seen in it and it drives very well and almost everything works, so I'm keeping it for the foreseeable future.
