I've done several long distance purchases as follows:

1992 9000CDT on ebay, drove back from Nashville, car met my expectations was ok. current owner was clueless about Saabs.

1987 900 on ebay, drove back from Chicago, car had more issues than advertised but mechanically was ok. Kept it for three years and sold for 2x purchase price (but it did have newer tires, ball joints, brakes etc).

1994 9000 Aero Saabnet, drove back from Santa Fe, couple of minor cosmetic issues but great overall.

1996 9000 Aero autotrader, good car inept owner paperwork issues.

plus a couple of other cars from thebay for parts that were fine. But several I walked from too...

Basically I'd say you want to get the VIN and ask a Saab dealer to run it (if owner has not had free campaigns done they aren't going to a dealer - it's money in the pocket for the dealer - they were hot on all of my purchases to see what they could do), Do a carfax but don't hold that as 100%. My wife was in two accidents (not her fault) in her 1987 900S had the repairs done under insurance but THERE WERE'T ANY CARFAX ENTRIES. No police report but no carfax entry. Same on one of my 92 9000CDT's, got hit in the right front door. Got door replaced, entire side painted, insurance paid for it (other drivers!). Also was a police report on that one. Had a Carfax account for 90 days and ran everything I could think of, including all of my cars just to see what comes back. Have the seller take masssssss quantities of pictures for YOU and send to YOU. Don't rely on just the ones in any ad. Detailed interior pictures, detailed exterior pictures, and several of the engine compartment too. My thinking is if the seller can't or won't do the pictures something is *wrong*. Don't listen to the "I don't have a digital camera or can't borrow one" whine. Less than $200 for a good camera and many have them in the phones. Bet you know someone that has a cell phone with a camera in it, don't you? If the seller has a car in the $2K plus range they can get pictures you want if they really are interested in selling the car and are HONEST.
