The downpipe is the pipe that extends from the turbocharger to just behind the area of the steering rack. On later models it contains an integral catalytic convertor, and on earlier models, the cat was behind the downpipe. From the cat on back ("cat back"), you have your choice of what to do. Since the exhaust will have cooled a bit by this point, some say a 2.5 inch system is as good as a 3 inch system, but it all depends on how much gas you're trying to pump through the exhaust pipe. Someone with a ultra-tuned engine producing over 300 bhp may want 3 inch.
The best argument I've heard for a 3 inch downpipe is that it reduces the temperature of the turbocharger and improves spool-up time. However, they are a bit of a pain to install. There's not a lot of room in there. If you have a stock ECU, I'd stick with stock downpipe.
