More info: it sometimes goes into reverse. Not very often, but sometimes. Never when the tractor-trailer in from of you is backing up or you pulled into a downhill parking spot but once in a while for no reason I can determine. I had a dealer and a mechanic fool with the linkage to no avail. The tranny makes no noise when in forward or reverse. The clutch is OK, if a bit worn after 178k miles. It does not go into reverse started or stopped, rolling or stationary, forward or back. The shifter feels like it does not pull back far enough - it runs into a soft wall instead of going in. Pulling off the shifter boot and making the shifter move further to the right did not help. Adjusting the linkage to the point where it was impossible to shift into first did not help. The coupler was not that badly worn. What does this sound like?
